It's one thing to get shutout. You try your best but it just wasn't your day as you go home scoreless. It's another thing to get blown out and you only have 2 points. That says you was dominated all game and your only score was from your opponent's fuckup in the endzone. Personally, I feel only scoring 2 points in a game is worse than getting shutout. A shutout means your opponent was simply better. 2 points means your opponent was simply better AND they knew they could afford to give up a safety because you are no threat to make a comeback.
Keep in mind, the Showboats are not a expansion team. They're the Tampa Bay Bandits who were relocated to Memphis to take on the namesake of another original USFL team. Todd Haley is still their coach so that's probably why they're winless so far. Especially since after stinking up the joint last season as a Bandit, Jordan Ta'amu got his groove back in the XFL as a D.C. Defender. If they don't quickly right the ship, it's gonna be a long season in Memphis.
THE GAMES
New Orleans Breakers 28
Birmingham Stallions 31
I noticed FOX used fake crowd noise for the Showboats-Stallions game but USA didn't for their Gamblers-Breakers broadcast. FOX was probably self-conscious over the fewer than usual number of fans who attended last Saturday's primetime game. Considering on the same day there was a Janet Jackson concert around the corner, the Ag-Pro 300 Nascar Xfinity series race at Talladega and Alabama's A-Day Game in Tuscaloosa, Alabamans had better things to do than watch practice squadders and free agents in USFL action. I expect them to return for this game to support their hometown Stallions. Especially since they're currently undefeated.
Memphis Showboats 10
Houston Gamblers 13
After getting boat raced by Birmingham, the Showboats set sail for the win column against the Gamblers. I don't see that happening. Granted, both teams are winless so anyone could come out on top here. But I like to think Houston has a better chance of pulling out this dub than Memphis. I still haven't watched a game so I'm just pulling these predictions out of my ass.
Pittsburgh Maulers 15
Philadelphia Stars 24
The invisible fans were at the Panthers-Stars game too on FS1. Must be a FOX thing. They couldn't have had more than 100 people in the stands. There were more security personnel at the stadium than fans. Like, why they hell is this game in Canton? None of these teams are associated with Ohio so unless Stallion fans travel, this hub will have the lowest attendance.
New Jersey Generals 17
Michigan Panthers 21
Generals-Maulers was so ugly, I thought Jac Collinsworth was calling the game solo. But nope, Michael Robinson was there in Canton too. I couldn't tell if that was good defense or bad offense but UGH! I see why they're here in the USFL. Also, it's nice to see the Panthers tie the amount of wins they had all of last season. Now if you excuse me, night 2 of the NFL Draft is coming up.
LAST WEEK: 3-1
OVERALL: 6-2
