Last week, I mentioned how stacked it was with events and holidays due to the NFL Draft, Star Wars Day, Cinco de Mayo and Mother's Day. But I completely forgot about all the racing events that took place over that weekend. The Kentucky Derby happened Saturday (Derby winner Rich Strike is skipping the Preakness to race in the Belmont Stakes so they won't interrupt the horse's schedule of racing once every 5 weeks). And Nascar raced at historic Darlington while Formula 1 raced for the first time in Miami Sunday. I was gonna watch the F1 race because I wondered how the hell they fit a racetrack around Dolphins stadium? It turns out Stephen Ross owns the area around the stadium so the track is permanent but everything else is removable. But ABC wouldn't work with me and Nascar was on cable so I stuck with watching the USFL.
Maybe in the future I will write about why I stopped watching Nascar. I used to be a huge fan in the early 2000s buying the diecast cars and watching races every week. But over time they added gimmicks like playoffs and stage racing and I just lost interest in it. It didn't help that they put more races on cable and start times for races became more random than before. I might save it for the start of next year's season or when F1 passes Nascar in the total ratings.
THE GAMES
Michigan Panthers 17
Tampa Bay Bandits 21
The Bandits lost a defensive battle against the Stallions with kicker Brandon Aubrey putting the host team on his back. Speaking of kickers, Mr. 7-9 buried his kicker, who's actually a punter, after he doinked a chip shot field goal to win the game. Michael Carrizosa may have been kicking field goals in The Spring League but at San Jose State, he only kicked in his freshman year where he went 1-1 on PATs and 0-2 on FGs. For the rest of his collegiate career he's been a star punter and kickoff specialists. And when the Browns signed him and 12 other UDFAs, he was brought in as a punter for their 2018 rookie minicamp. Only to be waived 11 days later.
So should Mac have made that short field goal considering he played for the TSL's Conquerors as their kicker? Absolutely. But like we seen with Kirby Wilson and the Maulers and Matt Nagy with the Bears, shitty/hard ass coaches scapegoat their players to cover for their fuckups. When you're that close to the endzone, why the hell didn't they just punch it in? It annoys me so much when teams rather kick field goals than score TDs when they have a effective running game, plenty of time on the clock and/or timeouts left. Especially when the guy isn't a real kicker and only does it because no one needs a punter right now. So with him gone, they bring in actual placekicker Cole Murphy who...never punted at Syracuse or with the AAF's San Diego Fleet. Someone tell this dumbass kicking and punting is completely different!
New Orleans Breakers 33
New Jersey Generals 30
I know I just spent 2 paragraphs defending a punter who sucks at kicking but yeah, I see why the Generals replaced Nick Rose with Austin Jones. There's no defending going 3-10 on FGs. And the 2 QB system may be working for them but a hurt De'Andre Johnson will slow them down.
Birmingham Stallions 24
Philadelphia Stars 10
This game was closer than it should've been. The Panthers turned the ball over 4 times, including 3 INTs by Shea Patterson and it took a punter cosplaying as a kicker hitting the uprights to escape with a win. I predicted Stars vs Stallions to be the championship game matchup so in this preview match, I'll go with B'Ham's defense to stifle Philly's offense.
Pittsburgh Maulers 6
Houston Gamblers 28
The Gamblers defense also forced 4 turnovers with 3 INTs but due to a shitty offense, they kept trotting out Nick Vogel to kick long field goals (Breakers Taylor Bertolet joined in on the kicking contest) and they lose by giving up a late TD. This will be a much needed bounce back game.
LAST WEEK 4-0
OVERALL 11-5
