Another spring football championship game. Another team with a losing record that has a chance at being league champion. Granted, the North division was such trash, no one finished with more than 4 wins. But that's what happens when you only have 8 teams and the talent across the league is fairly even due to the players being free agents, practice squadders and bench warmers from the NFL. Will the Pittsburgh Maulers follow in the footsteps of the Arlington Renegades and upset another juggernaut? Who knows but if they do, there's gonna be a lot of people bitching about it. So, let's finish this preview before another NAL team gets the boot.
THE BIG GAME
Pittsburgh Maulers 16
Birmingham Stallions 28
Last week, I picked Michigan to win because I felt they relied on defense more. Well it was Pittsburgh's defense that was the star of the show forcing 3 INTs canceling out the Panthers passing game. Yet, the Maulers offense couldn't capitalize off those turnovers and Michigan was able to force the first overtime game of the season. In the USFL, they do a best of 3 2-pt conversion shootout. I felt the Panthers got boned on their first attempt where fumbles into the endzone are returned to the spot of the fumble. If they didn't have that bullshit rule, the Panthers could've stayed alive a little longer in the shootout. Instead, the Maulers go from bottom dwellers last season to championship game this season. It's as if getting rid of toxic coaches matters.
WHAT HAPPENED NEW ORLEANS!!! They had the best offense this year but got blown out! Did Stallions backup QB Kyle Sloter give Birmingham his old team's playbook? The Stallions straight up outperformed the Breakers on their way to a 2nd straight USFL championship game. The Maulers already lost to the Stallions in week 4 and Troy Williams is no Luis Perez so I don't see another upset coming. Because certainly Birmingham will protect the ball this time right?
LAST WEEK: 1-1
OVERALL: 24-18
